If you are under age 65 and unable to work due to a physical handicap, chronic illness, or mental disorder, you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability (SSD). SSD benefits are available to qualifying individuals who have worked for a sufficient amount of time, paying Social Security taxes into the system.

There are certain criteria you must meet to qualify for SSD benefits, including:
- You must have earned Social Security "insurance," which usually means you have had a full-time job for five out of the last ten years before your disability.
- You must be "disabled," meaning that you are unable to do significant, gainful activity (SGA), for a 12-month period. This means that you are unable to earn more than about $1,000 a month on a "sustainable basis," which is eight hours a day, five days a week, on a consistent basis. The $1,000 amount is periodically increased by the Social Security Administration.
- You must be able to show that you cannot do work based on your age, education, and functional limitations.
- You must be able to show that you cannot do any of your past relevant work and cannot do any other work. For example, if there are jobs available that you are able to do, but you don't wish to do or they don't pay what you are used to earning, you still may not be considered disabled.
- The disability must be due to a "severe impairment" that is supported by your doctor's records and must be expected to last more than 12 months. You must be able to show you are unable to perform many activities of daily life.
